Make Moving Day a Breeze

You have now spent months attempting to locate the perfect, new home for you and your family. Your dream home was found and now you are ready to embark on this new milestone. Time to settle in and get comfortable… but first, it is time to pack and move everything into the new place. Have no fear! Perfleek is offering a few tips on how to make this crucial moving day a piece of cake:

MAKE LISTS

Compiling a list of all the things you are planning to bring to the new place is a great first step in the moving process. Listing all the items you need from every room prior to the big moving day will save a considerable amount of time. Get spiffy by color coding the lists based on room. It will allow you to relax a tad bit because you will already know what you need to pack without having to weed through every belonging and it will help you avoid the feeling of not knowing where to start.

 DONATION DAY

Days, or even weeks, before the big move take the time to go through the house and gather items that you no longer need or use. Get some trash bags and fill them up with items that you no longer have a use for and can be given away. Conjure up all unwanted clothes, dishes, or anything else that you know you will not use in the new house. Not only are you creating an easier approach when packing day comes, you are also doing a great deed by donating to your community.

 LABEL

If you do not label your boxes, moving day is going to be a hassle. Using different colored tape, markers, or a label maker is the best hack when it comes to packing up, especially boxes. Boxes, bags, and plastic totes/tubs are popular picks when packing items. You are going to have a ton of belongings… EVERYWHERE. Remember your color coded list from step one? Be sure to mark and label your boxes according to the corresponding room color and indicate the type of belongings contained within. If you prefer to take an extra step, you can write on the box which room they will go in. This will leave you with no confusion when trying to find the right box for the new room. Don’t forget to label your boxes or bags containing the items you wish to donate, or for items headed for the trash or recycling.

GET CREATIVE AND PRACTICAL

Packing day does not have to be a day of dread. Put your thinking cap on and wrap your delicate items in your towels, keep clothes that were hung up in the closet on the hanger, store items in large suitcases, and take step-by-step pictures of items that require dismantling so that you have something to refer back to when reconstructing. Also, make sure there is no added stress or distractions by having a plan for someone to care for your kids or pets off-site.

TACKLE MORE WHILE YOUR NEW HOME IS VACANT

If time permits, take advantage of your new home while it is vacant. It may be tempting to get moved and settled in as soon as you have that key, but you’ll thank yourself later if you tackle some deep cleaning or maintenance tasks before you move your furniture and belongings inside. Take an assessment of each room and make note of home improvements or cleaning you’d like to be done before you settle in, such as painting, refinishing hardwood floors and trim, or hiring a company to clean the carpets and sanitize your home. All of these tasks will be much easier before your belongings are moved in.

HAVE FUN

Well… have as much fun as possible. The moving day is the first real step to making your new house feel like home. Ask some family and friends to help with the process, rent moving trucks or trailers, or hire a professional moving company. This day does not need to be aggravating or tiring, so grab some water for hydration, get a portable speaker to listen to some music and enjoy unpacking into what is about to be your new home! But most importantly, before setting your move date, check the weather forecast.
